Corey Davis likely to return vs. Ravens; Marcus Mariota back to 100 percent

The return of Titans rookie receiver Corey Davis is imminent, and it’s likely to come Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.

Golden State (4-3) shot 57 from the field opposed to Detroit’s 46 percent mark, but continual carelessness was the issue yet again. They turned it over 26 times, leading to 33 points for the Pistons.

Every game this season, the Warriors have turned over the ball 16 or more times.

Draymond Green, who avoided a suspension from his altercation with Washington Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal on Friday, looked out of sorts. He pulled down 13 boards, but he committed a game-high six turnovers and only four assists.

The announcement of Kapler’s hiring will be made sometime this week.

Kapler, 42, hit .268 in 12 major league seasons as an outfielder with Boston, the Texas Rangers and four other clubs. He is known to have a strong background in analytics, an area the Phillies said they planned to stress in their search.

The star recruit and son of Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery had planned to sit out as a freshman and play baseball for Iowa in the spring. But backup point guard Christian Williams left the program last week, leaving Iowa thin at that position.

Although he finished 27 of 45 for 423 yards, the Lions failed to score a touchdown despite seven trips inside the Steelers’ 30-yard line, as downs, turnovers or field goals ended their drives.

Smith-Schuster, who saw extra snaps in wake of Martavis Bryant’s suspension, finished with seven catches for 193 yards and the long TD. Bryant, who questioned Smith-Schuster’s talent on Instagram, simply watched on the sideline as Smith-Schuster all but took away his spot in the offense.

Phillies tab Dodgers exec Gabe Kapler as next manager

Gabe Kapler has been named the new manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, a league source confirmed to ESPN.com.

The problem with Manning is that he’s owed $22.2 million on the cap next year, including a $5 million roster bonus and a $10 million base salary. The roster bonus makes it likely the Giants will have to make a decision on Manning in March, before they’re even sure they’ll end up with a young quarterback in the draft. The Giants could clear out $16 million in cap space by designating Manning as a post-June 1 release, which is money they’ll need if they want to re-sign Justin Pugh and Weston Richburg before looking at that enormous Odell Beckham Jr. extension.

Davis returned to practice Monday, on a limited basis, for the first time since Week 2, when he suffered a hamstring injury that caused him to miss five games.

“I’m feeling the best I’ve felt. I’m feeling real confident this week,” said Davis, the No. 5 overall pick out of Western Michigan, noting he’ll “definitely” be 100 percent if he’s out there this week. “It’s been tough on me, but the main thing is me staying positive.”

Tight end Delanie Walker did not practice with a right ankle bone bruise, but Mularkey noted it was mostly due to the fact the Titans had an extra day of practice this week.

Safety Johnathan Cyprien returned to practice on a limited basis for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 1. Mularkey said Cyprien’s practice reps were plentiful, similar to Davis, leading to a decent chance he’ll push to play Sunday as well.

The Detroit Pistons, after beating the LA Clippers the evening prior in Southern California, stole a huge road win on Sunday by defeating the defending champs 115-107 at Oracle Arena.

The Best Local Spots Near Every Playoff Ballpark

If you’re a fan of any of the eight MLB teams still playing and are lucky enough to attend a playoff game, congratulations! That’s awesome. (Unless you’re a Red Sox fan in which case it’s looking like it could be a very sad scene at Fenway on Sunday). You’ll need to plan out your eating and drinking schedule accordingly. The lines inside the stadiums are going to be extremely intimidating and frustrating to deal with. So, if you don’t want to get to the stadium as soon as the gates open and get right in the food lines, then consider finding food options around the stadium.

“There’s playing football — and then there’s playing football in Kansas City,” Charles wrote. “The city is special…the stadium is special…the atmosphere isn’t like anywhere else in the world. It was a privilege to be able to take part in so many of those Sundays at Arrowhead, and to be able to contribute to so many great Chiefs teams.

“Things are different now, I guess. It’s nine years later — and I’m coming back to K.C. for a road game, playing for a new team. A different team for the first time in what feels like forever. But it’s times like these that make you think about how it started. Times like these that make me think about how lucky I was to call Kansas City home.”

Charles, who was selected by Kansas City in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft, signed a one-year deal with the Broncos in May following his release from the Chiefs in February. The veteran wanted to remain with the team and was even willing to take a pay cut to make it happen, but ultimately couldn’t change his fate. Still, he doesn’t take being cut personally.

“At the end of the day, I wouldn’t change a single thing about the past nine years,” Charles wrote. “I could go on and on about how grateful I am, or about what my old team means to me. But instead I’ll just say it like this: Football ends at some point. Family is forever.

NFL power rankings 2017: Tracking where teams are entering Week 5

The NFL wrapped up Week 4 with a great battle between the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington. The Chiefs secured the win and moved to 4-0, the last unbeaten team left in the NFL. Naturally, they’re the top-ranked team across the board in this week’s power rankings.

SB Nation released its Hope Rankings heading into Week 5. This isn’t a power rankings list. Instead, this list tells you which team SB Nation thinks has the most hope heading into Week 5. The Houston Texans are the No. 1 team on this week’s Hope Rankings. They defeated the Tennessee Titans, 57-14, in Week 4 — and rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson threw for 283 passing yards and four touchdowns.

Rookie safety Jabrill Peppers showed up on the injury report with a toe issue. Coach Hue Jackson said he has been dealing with it for a while, and it kept him out of practice on Wednesday. Peppers’ availability could come down to a Friday or game-day decision. — Pat McManamon

The biggest issue is still right tackle Marcus Gilbert (hamstring), who did not practice Wednesday and has been out for much of the past month. As one of the game’s best right tackles, Gilbert affects much of the what the offense wants to do schematically. Four other starters sat out Wednesday: center Maurkice Pouncey (chest), offensive guard Ramon Foster (back), defensive end Stephon Tuitt (back) and linebacker Vince Williams. None of those injuries is considered major, but missed game action is possible. — Jeremy Fowlerlakers_058

Jaguars expect RB Leonard Fournette to play Week 7 vs. Colts

The Jacksonville Jaguars expect running back Leonard Fournette to play in Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts after the star rookie injured his ankle Sunday, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette suffered a sprained right ankle late in the team’s 27-17 loss to the Rams and his status for the upcoming week is unclear.
Fournette suffered a sprained right ankle in the fourth quarter of the 27-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He was cleared to re-enter but remained on the sideline for Jacksonville’s final drive.

On Sunday, Fitzpatrick nearly led the Bucs to a comeback win. Down 31-0 in the third quarter, the team’s rally fell just short in a 38-33 loss. Fitzpatrick completed 22 of 32 passes for 290 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Fitzpatrick got time in the Bucs’ Week 2 win over the Bears, though he threw just one pass that fell incomplete. He was the starter for the Jets for the majority of last season, where he was 3-8 in his starts. The year before that, he led the Jets to a 10-6 record, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards along with 31 touchdowns against 15 interceptions.

Depending on the severity of Winston’s injury, the Bucs will be hoping they get 2015 Fitzpatrick, as opposed to the one we saw in 2016.

A few games doesn’t sound like a lot, but let’s put that in context for what New Orleans has been like over the past few years. The Saints gave up 13 points to Carolina; over the rest of their games, the Panthers have averaged 23 points. The Saints held Newton & Co. 10 points below their season average. Miami hasn’t been great, but it fell 15.3 points below expectation when the Saints shut it out in Week 4. (The Lions exceeded their season average, but even that’s only a trick of defensive scoring.)falcons_029

Carolina Panthers Jersey Film Analysis: The Shovel Option

The Carolina Panthers have had issues running the football on traditional run plays all year long. We saw these problems continue yesterday, as the Detroit Lions did an excellent job of stopping the Panthers on the ground, holding them to just 28 yards rushing. The Lions were able to stop the Panthers from effectively running the football because their interior linemen did a great job of clogging up the interior run lanes, while their edge defenders and linebackers stayed disciplined on the edge to prevent any cutbacks.

The Carolina Panthers are slowly bringing back option elements into their offense every week. As Cam Newton continues to recover from his off-season shoulder surgery, it will be interesting to see how the Panthers balance their offense with traditional runs and option runs moving forward.

After passing for just four touchdowns with five interceptions and three fumbles through Chicago’s first four games, the Bears have finally seen enough out of Mike Glennon. Head coach John Fox will give rookie Mitch Trubisky a shot under center in his first career start on Monday night.

Yahoo Sports has the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers in its top five. The Eagles took care of business at home against the Arizona Cardinals, and the Panthers — led by quarterback Cam Newton — are on a two-game winning streak.

The Eagles moved up in ESPN’s power rankings, too. They were No. 8 last week but moved up to No. 4. The Panthers and Patriots also climbed up this list after their respective Week 5 victories.

There are no additional Texas laws that apply here.

Game 4 of the best-of-five series is Tuesday. Jake Arrieta returns from his own hamstring injury for the Cubs, while Tanner Roark gets the ball for the Nationals.

“We’ve got to attack. We’ve got to be in attack mode,” Rizzo said. “There’s no relaxing just because we’re up in the series.”

Chicago committed four errors, including two by left fielder Kyle Schwarber on one ugly play, and Jason Heyward also made an uncharacteristic baserunning mistake. But the Cubs got a huge pinch-hit RBI single from Albert Almora Jr. and a solid pitching performance from Jose Quintana in the return of postseason baseball to Wrigley after last year’s World Series ended in Cleveland.

Francona said Saturday that Encarnacion was unlikely to start Game 3 at Yankee Stadium, but the three-time All-Star hadn’t been ruled out even though he used crutches and wore a boot during a day off in the series.

Encarnacion said nothing is broken in his ankle. The team had feared a worse diagnosis, but Francona said Encarnacion felt much better Saturday and the club had no plans to replace him on the roster.

The injury certainly looked bad. Encarnacion rolled in the infield dirt in obvious pain after going awkwardly into second base as he attempted to scamper back on a line-drive double play. But an MRI showed only the sprain.

Encarnacion batted .258 with 38 home runs and 107 RBI in his first season with the Indians this year. steelers_001

Roark is 4-2 in seven career starts against the Cubs and is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA against Chicago this season.

White, who had a tryout with Vancouver during training camp and was cut Saturday, has a reputation as an NHL grinder. Boston is familiar with him from his time with the Montreal Canadiens.

“I’m just going to play my game wherever I go,” White told the Boston Globe. “I’m probably here for a reason. Just play physical, straight up-and-down, north-south game. Chip in where I can. Pretty self-explanatory the way I play. Can’t change it now.”

Tuesday’s game was officially called 35 minutes after it was scheduled to begin. With rain forecast throughout the evening, Joe Torre — Major League Baseball’s chief baseball officer — said there was not enough of a window without rain to begin the game with hopes of getting it in.

Torre said that not burning either of Tuesday’s starting pitchers also played a factor in the decision not to begin the game even though rain did not start falling until shortly before the postponement announcement was made.

He camped at the left of the net, took a pass from Henrik Zetterberg and put the puck past Bishop.

Mantha’s goal came when his shot from a low angle on the left side went inside the right post.

“We still felt that we had the tying goal in us,” Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg said, “but didn’t really get much out of the 6-on-5. Got to win some more draws there; I lost three in a row.”

Jamie Benn got his 300th career assist on the first-period goal by Seguin. . Klingberg has scored a goal in each of the last two games and has at least one point in all three Dallas has played. . Both of Seguin’s goals have come on the power play. . Detroit’s Mike Green had two assists, giving him six in three games. . Red Wings D Danny DeKeyser left with a lower-body injury. . The video board showed a tribute to Detroit defenseman Trevor Daley, who played 756 games for Dallas.

He Said What?! The Best NFL quotes of Week 6

From postgame press conferences to next-day media availabilities, NFL players and coaches can’t escape the microphone..

1. Packers coach Mike McCarthy will have to trust Hundley There’s really no replacing a two-time league MVP like Rodgers, but McCarthy cannot afford to water down his offense with Hundley at the helm. Hundley is in his third year with the Packers, who selected the former UCLA quarterback in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. While he had attempted just 11 passes during the regular season prior to Sunday, completing three for 17 yards, he is an athletic player who can provide the same mobility as Rodgers.

2. Hit the free-agent market Hundley and Rodgers are the only two active quarterbacks on the roster. Green Bay can either promote second-year player Joe Callahan from the practice squad or sign a street free agent to back up Hundley. Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has had some of his biggest games against the Packers, is the most notable free-agent QB, but he might not be a good fit in Green Bay.

Expect the Rams to go run-heavy with Todd Gurley to exploit the Jaguars’ biggest weakness (run defense), but ultimately, Jared Goff will be doomed by Jacksonville’s pass defense. That’s because Leonard Fournette can power right though the Rams’ front and allow Sacksonville to be unleashed on a young QB.

Derek Carr should return this week to lead his team after it struggled against Baltimore. The Raiders need every bit of his passing to knock any thoughts of an upset out of the heads of the Chargers, fresh off their first win. Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon make it interesting, but Carr, his receivers and Marshawn Lynch squash LA in the end.

Such confidence may invite ridicule, but McCarthy is right. Hundley has strengths that, utilized by other quarterbacks, have confounded NFL defenses before and, worth noting, possessed by a man the Packers opted not to sign in Colin Kaepernick.tigers_135

Week 5 NFL picks straight up: Chiefs edge Texans; Raiders handle Ravens

Going into Week 5 of the 2017 NFL season, here are some fun facts after hot starts. Well, it may not be that much fun for the team with the hottest start.

That would be the 4-0 Chiefs, the league’s last undefeated team after their last-minute win over Washington on Monday. It may not necessarily be a good omen. Since 2013, of the six teams that were the last to lose a game each year, only one has even won a playoff game that season. And that was the 2015 Panthers, who began 14-0 and reached the Super Bowl.

New England wouldn’t lose two in a row, would it? A defensive mess on the back end isn’t exactly what you want when facing a red-hot Jameis Winston on the road and on a short week. But the solace here is the Buccaneers’ defense is riddled with injuries and even shakier back seven play in coverage. Tom Brady does his dropback often thing and comes through this time with a late TD to out-duel Winston.

Detroit’s defense isn’t getting enough credit for its 3-1 start. Anthony Zettel is leading a terrific pass rush, while Darius Slay and Quandre Diggs have nailed down the back end. Carolina’s defense is in a bigger funk against high-volume, diverse passing attacks, such as the Lions’ with Matthew Stafford. It’s a much rougher day for Cam Newton on the road as the Panthers let down after the win over the Patriots.x (18)
