Needed Game 7 wins in the first round in both 1991 and 1992 to advance

The greatest team of the Lemieux-Jagr duo won an NHL-record 17 straight games from March 9-April 10 to finish with a league-best 119 points. Four different Penguins (Lemieux, Kevin Stevens, Rick Tocchet and Ron Francis) scored at least 100 points, with Jagr at 94.

It also didn’t help that others’ attempts to listen to players’ concerns were awkward and/or tone deaf. Bills owner Terry Pegula complimented Anquan Boldin for his message about police brutality, but called the receiver “Antwan.” He also said the NFL could use a spokesperson like Boldin on social issues because it couldn’t be “white owner but needs to be someone who’s black.”

Both teams are looking way up at the Eagles in the NFC East, and the loser has a long, difficult path as midseason approaches. Knowing well in advance that Ezekiel Elliott is available will help the Cowboys. Possibly being down two key offensive linemen (Trent Williams, Brandon Scherff) does Washington no good. Neither does the fact that the Cowboys have won four straight in Washington, including Dak Prescott’s first career win last season.

Deshaun Watson has been great, but it has to be pretty worrisome that Houston is 3-4 despite Watson’s play. The biggest concern is they’ve lost three games when scoring 30 or more points this season. They had three such losses in their franchise history prior to this season.

Can the Bills keep winning with such little production from their wide receivers? Their receivers rank last in receptions (45) and yards (594), and eventually Buffalo could need them to make some plays.flames_083

Carolina Panthers Jersey Film Analysis: The Shovel Option

The Carolina Panthers have had issues running the football on traditional run plays all year long. We saw these problems continue yesterday, as the Detroit Lions did an excellent job of stopping the Panthers on the ground, holding them to just 28 yards rushing. The Lions were able to stop the Panthers from effectively running the football because their interior linemen did a great job of clogging up the interior run lanes, while their edge defenders and linebackers stayed disciplined on the edge to prevent any cutbacks.

The Carolina Panthers are slowly bringing back option elements into their offense every week. As Cam Newton continues to recover from his off-season shoulder surgery, it will be interesting to see how the Panthers balance their offense with traditional runs and option runs moving forward.

After passing for just four touchdowns with five interceptions and three fumbles through Chicago’s first four games, the Bears have finally seen enough out of Mike Glennon. Head coach John Fox will give rookie Mitch Trubisky a shot under center in his first career start on Monday night.

Yahoo Sports has the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers in its top five. The Eagles took care of business at home against the Arizona Cardinals, and the Panthers — led by quarterback Cam Newton — are on a two-game winning streak.

The Eagles moved up in ESPN’s power rankings, too. They were No. 8 last week but moved up to No. 4. The Panthers and Patriots also climbed up this list after their respective Week 5 victories.

He Said What?! The Best NFL quotes of Week 6

From postgame press conferences to next-day media availabilities, NFL players and coaches can’t escape the microphone..

1. Packers coach Mike McCarthy will have to trust Hundley There’s really no replacing a two-time league MVP like Rodgers, but McCarthy cannot afford to water down his offense with Hundley at the helm. Hundley is in his third year with the Packers, who selected the former UCLA quarterback in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. While he had attempted just 11 passes during the regular season prior to Sunday, completing three for 17 yards, he is an athletic player who can provide the same mobility as Rodgers.

2. Hit the free-agent market Hundley and Rodgers are the only two active quarterbacks on the roster. Green Bay can either promote second-year player Joe Callahan from the practice squad or sign a street free agent to back up Hundley. Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has had some of his biggest games against the Packers, is the most notable free-agent QB, but he might not be a good fit in Green Bay.

Expect the Rams to go run-heavy with Todd Gurley to exploit the Jaguars’ biggest weakness (run defense), but ultimately, Jared Goff will be doomed by Jacksonville’s pass defense. That’s because Leonard Fournette can power right though the Rams’ front and allow Sacksonville to be unleashed on a young QB.

Derek Carr should return this week to lead his team after it struggled against Baltimore. The Raiders need every bit of his passing to knock any thoughts of an upset out of the heads of the Chargers, fresh off their first win. Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon make it interesting, but Carr, his receivers and Marshawn Lynch squash LA in the end.

Such confidence may invite ridicule, but McCarthy is right. Hundley has strengths that, utilized by other quarterbacks, have confounded NFL defenses before and, worth noting, possessed by a man the Packers opted not to sign in Colin Kaepernick.tigers_135

Sources: Steelers’ Martavis Bryant, Jaguars’ Marqise Lee to play Sunday

Despite being listed as questionable because of an illness, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant will play Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Bryant was added to the team’s injury report on Saturday. He has 10 catches for 183 yards and one touchdown in four games this season for the 3-1 Steelers.

Also listed as questionable due to a rib injury, Jaguars receiver Marqise Lee is slated to play Sunday against Pittsburgh, a source said.

Lee did some work Friday, after not having practiced since suffering the injury during Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets.

He is Jacksonville’s second-leading receiver (13 catches for 159 yards), behind Allen Hurns (16 catches, 186 yards, two TDs). The Jaguars lost top receiver Allen Robinson for the season with a torn left ACL in the season opener.

At the end, key fantasy players listed Friday as “Out” for the week’s games will appear as a group. There are four teams on bye this week: The Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins all have the week off.

The New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played on Thursday night, leaving 13 remaining matchups whose fantasy-relevant injured players are represented here. First weekend games kick off at 1:00 p.m. ET this week.

Joe Thomas plays in 10,000th consecutive snap

It was a just shotgun trap run in the first quarter Sunday against the Ravens.

While the play itself was nothing special, it was a milestone for Browns left tackle Joe Thomas.

The 10-time Pro Bowler, now in his 11th season, has never missed a snap since the Browns selected him third overall in the 2007 NFL Draft. That Isaiah Crowell run gain against the Ravens was the 10,000th consecutive snap of his Hall-of-Fame career.

Nelson caught seven passes for 79 yards and a touchdown in a Week 1 win over the Seahawks.

The Packers also lost slot receiver Randall Cobb late in Sunday’s game. The speedy receiver, who already has 15 receptions this season, suffered a shoulder injury during the fourth quarter.

According to NFL Network, Cobb is considered day-to-day after avoiding serious injury. He underwent an MRI Monday.

Geronimo Allison and Davante Adams would start at wide receiver for Green Bay should Cobb and Nelson miss Sunday’s game.

Your league doesn’t have to limit itself to offensive players, either. You can use Individual Defensive Players (IDP) by selecting defensive positions, like Cornerback (CB), Edge Rusher (EDR), Defensive Tackle (DT) or Defensive Player Utility (DP — any defensive player position). This allows you to use players on both sides of the ball and really test — and even increase — your all-around football knowledge.

There are also some out-of-the-box options like Head Coach (HC, which gives you points when the NFL team you pick wins a game or reaches certain scoring thresholds) and Punter (P).

You can also include Injured Reserve (IR) spots, so you can stash an injured player until he is ready to play again, without sacrificing one of your active bench spots.b (13)

Ricardo Allen, the Falcons’ starting free safety, described his thoughts on the play.

Scott Kazmir, who currently plays for the Dodgers but was raised in Houston, is contributing to multiple organizations. Kazmir is donating $10k each to the Houston SPCA, the Coalition for Homeless, and the Houston Food Bank.

From a New York Giants perspective, I’d guess you’re surprised that after eight months the offense looked as bad as it did. Even without Odell Beckham Jr. it should have been more functional than it was in Sunday’s 19-3 loss.

Many people questioned the Jets signing a kicker coming off a bad year in Arizona. Even more questioned the Jets when Catanzaro made the roster despite being outkicked by Ross Martin in training camp.

His teammate and fellow cornerback Robert Alford told SB Nation what he saw unfold.

On the deep ball, I was on my man, Alford said. I turned around and I just saw that the ball was overthrown and that he caught it.

We’ve been getting pressure the whole night, Allen said. The defensive line has been killing. So I guess [Rodgers] was trying to get the ball out of his hands, and he went at one of the wrong ones, I think.

The confidence in his strength is what allows him to reach the second level of the defense so quickly. This is something rare that you see in running backs with 4.5 speed. This is because they can get to the edge, and that is where they get the most yards. Fournette can do both. He can hit the linebackers with force and keep his feet moving and the has the ability and quickness to get to the edge and gain another 20 yards on the outside.

This next clip shows how quick he can find the smallest hole and then uses his speed burst to gain positive yardage.

Ankle injury sidelines Odell Beckham Jr. for Giants’ opener

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will not play in Sunday night’s opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

With Beckham sidelined, second-year receiver Roger Lewis is expected to take a majority of his snaps. Offseason acquisition Brandon Marshall is also expected to play a bigger role.

There is a five-step process to be cleared from the concussion protocol, including a step that says a player must return to practice as a full participant. Due to the short week, the Texans only have one practice before the game.

Ellington was the Texans’ No. 2 receiver on Sunday, with Will Fuller out with a broken collarbone and Jaelen Strong suspended.

Strong will be back for Week 2, but Houston will still be without Fuller. Along with DeAndre Hopkins, the Texans have Braxton Miller and Andy Jones available at wide receiver. Running back Tyler Ervin could see time at receiver as well.

If the three tight ends are not cleared to play, the Texans could promote Evan Baylis from the practice squad. The undrafted free agent had four catches for 32 yards in three preseason games.

“New head coaches will hire former head coaches (on their staff), but I think there’s reluctance for the first-time general manager to hire a former GM because of concerns it would show weakness and sometimes reservations when you’re not totally self-secure. It’s like, ‘This guy might end up taking my spot because he may know how to play office politics a little better or he has more seasoning.'”

The offset is having an advisor who can offer guidance about how to handle what Dominik called “all the other stuff that comes across your plate.”

Newton said it’s like passing information on to a son or daughter.

Rodgers is one of the league’s best. He’s the primary reason the Packers were able to play their way out of a 4-6 start to a 10-6 finish last year. He’s been named league MVP twice in his career, and is usually in the conversation for the honor every season. Aaron Rodgers is the Packers offense, and as long as they have him on the field, they’re in contention.

Rodgers is under contract through 2019, and he’s averaging $22 million per year. He’ll be 36 when his current deal is up, but he hasn’t missed a game since 2013 and he threw for 40 touchdowns next season. He’s still in his prime, and he’ll be worth every penny when Green Bay does extend him.

“There was a lot of refreshing going on,” he said. “But it was exciting talking to him prior to and after the game. I tried not to dump so much on him. It’s a difference when you’re Cam Newton. And it’s a difference when you’re big brother. So now I try to find a fine line and give him a lot of the experiences I’ve [had].”

Newton said it’s like passing information on to a son or daughter.

“You can tell your kids everything they’re about to go through, but as soon as they go through it they’re like, ‘Man, I remember you telling me,'” he said. “I’m like, ‘Yeah, I told you.’

The 2015 NFL MVP was more concerned about living up to the standard “little” brother Caylin Newton set on Saturday in leading Howard University to one of the biggest upsets in college football history based on the point spread.
