Jon Gruden, Oakland Raiders: He was formally introduced as the team’s coach during a news conference Tuesday. The veteran coach interviewed with the team Monday and reportedly received a 10-year, $100 million contract from the team. On Jan. 11, Rapoport reported former Colts RB coach Jemal Singleton is taking a job as Raiders RBs coach under Gruden.
The Steelers become the caretaker of the No. 1 spot with the Patriots’ temporary (it says here) setback. RB Le’Veon Bell was not particularly involved in the offense Sunday in Cleveland after his late arrival before the season, but that undoubtedly will change soon. Rookie LB T.J. Watt probably won’t play every Sunday like he’s about to add a fourth NFL defensive player of the year award to the family’s mantel. But he brings energy and passion and he should be a nice addition to the defense.
The opening win over the Bears was probably more challenging than it needed to be, as the Falcons just held on at the end. Things get more interesting with Sunday night’s nationally televised matchup with the Packers in the first regular season game at the Falcons’ new stadium.
Who’s the best team in the NFC? There’s the Eagles and … who? Perhaps the Seahawks or Rams or Panthers?
No one, it seems, is talking about a dominant NFL team. No player is performing feats that have made for can’t-miss viewing.
The best game of the season before Thursday’s probably came when Rodgers, in his final game before getting hurt, took the Green Bay Packers to a game-winning touchdown in the final seconds at Dallas, just as he’d ousted the Cowboys from the NFC playoffs in the same building last season with crunchtime quarterbacking magic. But Rodgers’s late-game sleight of hand immediately was overshadowed by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones saying afterward that he’d bench any player on his team who protested during the national anthem.
