Going into Week 5 of the 2017 NFL season, here are some fun facts after hot starts. Well, it may not be that much fun for the team with the hottest start.
That would be the 4-0 Chiefs, the league’s last undefeated team after their last-minute win over Washington on Monday. It may not necessarily be a good omen. Since 2013, of the six teams that were the last to lose a game each year, only one has even won a playoff game that season. And that was the 2015 Panthers, who began 14-0 and reached the Super Bowl.
New England wouldn’t lose two in a row, would it? A defensive mess on the back end isn’t exactly what you want when facing a red-hot Jameis Winston on the road and on a short week. But the solace here is the Buccaneers’ defense is riddled with injuries and even shakier back seven play in coverage. Tom Brady does his dropback often thing and comes through this time with a late TD to out-duel Winston.
Detroit’s defense isn’t getting enough credit for its 3-1 start. Anthony Zettel is leading a terrific pass rush, while Darius Slay and Quandre Diggs have nailed down the back end. Carolina’s defense is in a bigger funk against high-volume, diverse passing attacks, such as the Lions’ with Matthew Stafford. It’s a much rougher day for Cam Newton on the road as the Panthers let down after the win over the Patriots.
