Roark is 4-2 in seven career starts against the Cubs and is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA against Chicago this season.

White, who had a tryout with Vancouver during training camp and was cut Saturday, has a reputation as an NHL grinder. Boston is familiar with him from his time with the Montreal Canadiens.

“I’m just going to play my game wherever I go,” White told the Boston Globe. “I’m probably here for a reason. Just play physical, straight up-and-down, north-south game. Chip in where I can. Pretty self-explanatory the way I play. Can’t change it now.”

Tuesday’s game was officially called 35 minutes after it was scheduled to begin. With rain forecast throughout the evening, Joe Torre — Major League Baseball’s chief baseball officer — said there was not enough of a window without rain to begin the game with hopes of getting it in.

Torre said that not burning either of Tuesday’s starting pitchers also played a factor in the decision not to begin the game even though rain did not start falling until shortly before the postponement announcement was made.

He camped at the left of the net, took a pass from Henrik Zetterberg and put the puck past Bishop.

Mantha’s goal came when his shot from a low angle on the left side went inside the right post.

“We still felt that we had the tying goal in us,” Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg said, “but didn’t really get much out of the 6-on-5. Got to win some more draws there; I lost three in a row.”

He Said What?! The Best NFL quotes of Week 6

From postgame press conferences to next-day media availabilities, NFL players and coaches can’t escape the microphone..

1. Packers coach Mike McCarthy will have to trust Hundley There’s really no replacing a two-time league MVP like Rodgers, but McCarthy cannot afford to water down his offense with Hundley at the helm. Hundley is in his third year with the Packers, who selected the former UCLA quarterback in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. While he had attempted just 11 passes during the regular season prior to Sunday, completing three for 17 yards, he is an athletic player who can provide the same mobility as Rodgers.

2. Hit the free-agent market Hundley and Rodgers are the only two active quarterbacks on the roster. Green Bay can either promote second-year player Joe Callahan from the practice squad or sign a street free agent to back up Hundley. Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has had some of his biggest games against the Packers, is the most notable free-agent QB, but he might not be a good fit in Green Bay.

Expect the Rams to go run-heavy with Todd Gurley to exploit the Jaguars’ biggest weakness (run defense), but ultimately, Jared Goff will be doomed by Jacksonville’s pass defense. That’s because Leonard Fournette can power right though the Rams’ front and allow Sacksonville to be unleashed on a young QB.

Derek Carr should return this week to lead his team after it struggled against Baltimore. The Raiders need every bit of his passing to knock any thoughts of an upset out of the heads of the Chargers, fresh off their first win. Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon make it interesting, but Carr, his receivers and Marshawn Lynch squash LA in the end.

Such confidence may invite ridicule, but McCarthy is right. Hundley has strengths that, utilized by other quarterbacks, have confounded NFL defenses before and, worth noting, possessed by a man the Packers opted not to sign in Colin Kaepernick.tigers_135

Week 5 NFL picks straight up: Chiefs edge Texans; Raiders handle Ravens

Going into Week 5 of the 2017 NFL season, here are some fun facts after hot starts. Well, it may not be that much fun for the team with the hottest start.

That would be the 4-0 Chiefs, the league’s last undefeated team after their last-minute win over Washington on Monday. It may not necessarily be a good omen. Since 2013, of the six teams that were the last to lose a game each year, only one has even won a playoff game that season. And that was the 2015 Panthers, who began 14-0 and reached the Super Bowl.

New England wouldn’t lose two in a row, would it? A defensive mess on the back end isn’t exactly what you want when facing a red-hot Jameis Winston on the road and on a short week. But the solace here is the Buccaneers’ defense is riddled with injuries and even shakier back seven play in coverage. Tom Brady does his dropback often thing and comes through this time with a late TD to out-duel Winston.

Detroit’s defense isn’t getting enough credit for its 3-1 start. Anthony Zettel is leading a terrific pass rush, while Darius Slay and Quandre Diggs have nailed down the back end. Carolina’s defense is in a bigger funk against high-volume, diverse passing attacks, such as the Lions’ with Matthew Stafford. It’s a much rougher day for Cam Newton on the road as the Panthers let down after the win over the Patriots.x (18)

Men who committed suicide.

NFL players who have demonstrated during the national anthem over the past year have said they are protesting police brutality and racism, not the flag or the anthem itself.

The protests began in August 2016, when former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during the national anthem in a preseason game.

Amari Cooper, WR, Oakland Raiders: For the third consecutive week, Cooper was held to two catches or fewer and 2.9 PPR fantasy points or fewer, as he finished Sunday’s game with 1.8 on his two targets. It’s the first time in his three-year, 37-game NFL career that Cooper has been held in single digits for three consecutive games, and that Michael Crabtree had 20.2 PPR fantasy points of his own on eight targets in his return from a chest injury doesn’t bode well for Cooper’s usage moving forward. EJ Manuel simply didn’t look to Cooper in this one, so consider Cooper a low-end WR3 at best for Week 6.

But that was then, and this is most definitely now. Research released in July on 202 deceased former football players revealed evidence of a brain disease linked to repeated head blows in nearly all of them. Many donors or their families contributed because of the players’ repeated concussions and troubling symptoms before they died. These players include men who were barely functional in their final years. Men who were broken physically and emotionally.

So a player who suffers a brain injury should never be allowed to participate in his next scheduled game, or two. All the guardians of professional football — from owners to league commissioner Roger Goodell to team executives and head coaches — talk and talk about wanting to make the sport safer in the age of CTE, and yet nobody stopped Adams from suiting up and signing up for another three hours of collisions.x (1)

Sources: Steelers’ Martavis Bryant, Jaguars’ Marqise Lee to play Sunday

Despite being listed as questionable because of an illness, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant will play Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Bryant was added to the team’s injury report on Saturday. He has 10 catches for 183 yards and one touchdown in four games this season for the 3-1 Steelers.

Also listed as questionable due to a rib injury, Jaguars receiver Marqise Lee is slated to play Sunday against Pittsburgh, a source said.

Lee did some work Friday, after not having practiced since suffering the injury during Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets.

He is Jacksonville’s second-leading receiver (13 catches for 159 yards), behind Allen Hurns (16 catches, 186 yards, two TDs). The Jaguars lost top receiver Allen Robinson for the season with a torn left ACL in the season opener.

At the end, key fantasy players listed Friday as “Out” for the week’s games will appear as a group. There are four teams on bye this week: The Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins all have the week off.

The New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played on Thursday night, leaving 13 remaining matchups whose fantasy-relevant injured players are represented here. First weekend games kick off at 1:00 p.m. ET this week.

Packers play hottest home game in Lambeau Field history

The Frozen Tundra was more like a sauna on Sunday afternoon.

With a kickoff temperature of 89, the Green Bay Packers officially played the hottest home game in Lambeau Field history.

Before Sunday, it was never warmer than 85 degrees for a Packers home game since they began recording temperatures in 1959. And that game wasn’t even in Green Bay. The 85-degree game came at Milwaukee’s County Stadium, where the Packers used to play two home games a season through the 1994 season. It was against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 10, 1978.

Players from both the Eagles and Giants took a knee around Sproles following an awkward plant and hit from safety Darian Thompson. Trainers were looking at the knee area.

Sproles was able to walk off under his own power, though, and the concern quickly turned to his wrist as he held his right arm in obvious pain as he headed indoors.

Hicks and Cox were both lost in the second quarter, further depleting a defense that was already down cornerbacks Ronald Darby and Jaylen Watkins, as well as safeties Rodney McLeod and Corey Graham.

Despite the injuries, the Eagles’ defense shut the Giants out in the first half, thanks in large part to a goal-line stand at the end of the second quarter.a (1)

Joe Thomas plays in 10,000th consecutive snap

It was a just shotgun trap run in the first quarter Sunday against the Ravens.

While the play itself was nothing special, it was a milestone for Browns left tackle Joe Thomas.

The 10-time Pro Bowler, now in his 11th season, has never missed a snap since the Browns selected him third overall in the 2007 NFL Draft. That Isaiah Crowell run gain against the Ravens was the 10,000th consecutive snap of his Hall-of-Fame career.

Nelson caught seven passes for 79 yards and a touchdown in a Week 1 win over the Seahawks.

The Packers also lost slot receiver Randall Cobb late in Sunday’s game. The speedy receiver, who already has 15 receptions this season, suffered a shoulder injury during the fourth quarter.

According to NFL Network, Cobb is considered day-to-day after avoiding serious injury. He underwent an MRI Monday.

Geronimo Allison and Davante Adams would start at wide receiver for Green Bay should Cobb and Nelson miss Sunday’s game.

Your league doesn’t have to limit itself to offensive players, either. You can use Individual Defensive Players (IDP) by selecting defensive positions, like Cornerback (CB), Edge Rusher (EDR), Defensive Tackle (DT) or Defensive Player Utility (DP — any defensive player position). This allows you to use players on both sides of the ball and really test — and even increase — your all-around football knowledge.

There are also some out-of-the-box options like Head Coach (HC, which gives you points when the NFL team you pick wins a game or reaches certain scoring thresholds) and Punter (P).

You can also include Injured Reserve (IR) spots, so you can stash an injured player until he is ready to play again, without sacrificing one of your active bench spots.b (13)

All the jokes after Eli Manning gets sacked by a ‘ghost’

Giants quarterback Eli Manning was sacked Monday night — by no one.

Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots, groin, (Q): Gronkowski left the Week 2 contest with a groin injury, but there were several early signs that it was not particularly serious. He was on the sideline riding a bike shortly afterward and was not immediately ruled out for a return to the game. Although he did not return, it may have been a proactive measure on the part of the team, particularly given that Gronkowski has certainly had his share of injuries in recent years and is coming off back surgery.

Gronkowski spoke with reporters early in the week, also a good sign by Patriots standards, and returned to practice Thursday and Friday on a limited basis after a day off on Wednesday. Perhaps the best indication came from the player himself, who told reporters Friday that he is good to go.

Jimmy Graham, Seattle Seahawks, ankle, (Q): Graham got his legs rolled up on from behind, trapping his left ankle in an awkward, externally rotated position. He did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but did return Friday and did “everything,” according to head coach Pete Carroll. Despite being listed as questionable, Graham is expected to play, per Carroll. The team travels east to face the Tennessee Titans in a late afternoon game. As always, given the questionable tag, fantasy owners should have a backup plan in place.o (13)

Quarterbacks whose minds are cluttered don’t run up to the line to double check the pass pro.

It’s not cheap to keep a starting quarterback in the NFL and the Bengals had little choice but to give Dalton a seven-year, $97.09 million deal in 2014 or risk losing the quarterback.

Dalton played up to the new contract, though. After an up-and-down 2014 that still landed him in the Pro Bowl, he had a strong 2015 with 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Had he not broken his thumb in the final weeks, who knows? Maybe the Bengals may have been able to finally get a playoff win under Lewis.

But when the Bengals gave Dalton that contract in 2014, the team made it easy to eventually move on from the quarterback in the future if he didn’t play up to his salary.

While it would’ve been costly in each of the last three offseasons to cut Dalton, it would save $13.9 million if the team did it in 2018. And it would scrub the quarterback from the books altogether in 2019 and 2020.

Now not only is Siemian completing more passes on third down, he’s also taking Detroit Lions control of the offense with protection changes, and command of the routes.

Here is Siemian in Week 1 against the Chargers. It’s early in the game, third down with medium. He hard counts the Chargers, makes sure the line is blocking it correctly, and rifles the ball for a first down.

Same game and Siemian showing his toughness. The left guard gets beat clean, but Siemian stands tall and throws for the first down. And he puts the ball in a spot where only the receiver can catch it.

Ricardo Allen, the Falcons’ starting free safety, described his thoughts on the play.

Scott Kazmir, who currently plays for the Dodgers but was raised in Houston, is contributing to multiple organizations. Kazmir is donating $10k each to the Houston SPCA, the Coalition for Homeless, and the Houston Food Bank.

From a New York Giants perspective, I’d guess you’re surprised that after eight months the offense looked as bad as it did. Even without Odell Beckham Jr. it should have been more functional than it was in Sunday’s 19-3 loss.

Many people questioned the Jets signing a kicker coming off a bad year in Arizona. Even more questioned the Jets when Catanzaro made the roster despite being outkicked by Ross Martin in training camp.

His teammate and fellow cornerback Robert Alford told SB Nation what he saw unfold.

On the deep ball, I was on my man, Alford said. I turned around and I just saw that the ball was overthrown and that he caught it.

We’ve been getting pressure the whole night, Allen said. The defensive line has been killing. So I guess [Rodgers] was trying to get the ball out of his hands, and he went at one of the wrong ones, I think.

The confidence in his strength is what allows him to reach the second level of the defense so quickly. This is something rare that you see in running backs with 4.5 speed. This is because they can get to the edge, and that is where they get the most yards. Fournette can do both. He can hit the linebackers with force and keep his feet moving and the has the ability and quickness to get to the edge and gain another 20 yards on the outside.

This next clip shows how quick he can find the smallest hole and then uses his speed burst to gain positive yardage.
